YOGA FOR FERTILITY AND CONCEPTION
WHAT IS YOGA FOR FERTILITY AND CONCEPTION?
Fertility yoga is designed for men and women who are trying to conceive. Fertility yoga incorporates specific postures designed to aid the reproductive organs, thereby increasing your chances of pregnancy. In addition, fertility yoga, including the use of breathing techniques, provides stress relief and relaxation that balances the body's emotions and hormones to help the body be a more favorable place for conception.
CAN YOGA REALLY IMPACT FERTILITY?
Dr. Alice Domar, at one time a researcher at Harvard Medical School, conducted a study for women who had been trying to conceive for at least a year and entered some of them into a 10 week mind/body program that included
yoga, meditation and nutrition. 55% of participants in the program became pregnant within a year as compared to only 20% of the participants in the study that did not go through the 10 week
mind/body program (the control group). Dr. Domar indicates that yoga was the tool she would least like to lose in the program she was running at Boston IVF, one of the largest
infertility treatment centers in the country.
In addition, couples who took part in a program including yoga, meditation and nutrition at St. Peter's Medical Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey had remarkable results,
where couples had a 50 percent fertility rate within one year. Interestingly enough, whether the woman's inability to conceive was caused by unexplained infertility or low sperm counts,
participants were helped in encouragingly high numbers.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF YOGA FOR CONCEPTION?
These classes are designed to help increase your chances for conception by offering a number of physical and mental health benefits:
Although stress hasn't been proven to cause infertility, stress does not help when you are trying to conceive. High stress levels can affect your body's hormonal balance, causing problems with the menstrual cycle and ovulation as well as generating chemicals in the body that weaken immunity. In your journey to get pregnant, you and your partner may be dealing with extreme levels of physical and emotional stress. Certain fertility treatments can be very hard on a woman's body, and anxiety of waiting for test results can put you through a myriad of emotions. Yoga, with its use of relaxation breathing techniques, combined with the flushing out of physical toxins, provides a respite for the negative impact of stress, depression, and anger on the body.
Improved Physical Health
Yoga can help improve your overall physical health, which in turn can increase your likelihood of getting pregnant. Yoga:
- Increases blood and fluid circulation, bringing oxygen and nutrients to your reproductive system
- Tones and strengths muscles that support the reproductive organs
- Improves your spinal alignment
- Increases energy and stamina
- Helps the body fight off any possible toxic effects of infertility drugs
Yoga can also help improve your relationship with your partner. Partners who perform yoga together learn to relax and spend more quality time together as well as learn to communicate better, both verbally and non-verbally. This can help to lessen the emotional stress of timed intercourse, introduce more passion into the relationship and shift away from the "trying to get pregnant" stress cloud that can hover over your relationship.
